St. Petri

St. Petri is a Gothic hall church in Brunswick featuring three naves supported by robust octagonal pillars and vaulted ceilings. The western tower rises about 71 meters and dominates the skyline of the old town.

The building was constructed in 1200, destroyed by fire in 1256, and rebuilt as a basilica in 1260. It later evolved into the current Gothic hall church and suffered damage during World War II, which was repaired in 1971.

The church serves as a gathering place for the congregation, reflecting Lutheran traditions that continue today. It became part of the St. Andreas-Petri parish in 2023 and remains central to religious life in the city.

The church is located in the heart of the old town at An der Petrikirche 9 and is easily accessible on foot. Four bronze bells from the 1970s ring to announce services and events, helping visitors plan their visit around these times.

Atop the tower sits a 3.25-meter copper rooster weather vane designed by Bodo Kampmann, visible from far away. This distinctive figure was installed in 1971 following the repairs after war damage, making it a recognizable landmark.
