Steinberger See, lake in Germany
The Steinberger See is the largest lake in East Bavaria, covering roughly 184 hectares with gentle green shores and calm bays. The water is clear enough for swimming, and around it you will find sandy beaches and multiple zones set aside for water sports such as sailing, surfing, and waterskiing.
The lake formed about 30 years ago on the site of a closed brown coal mining operation. After the coal deposits were exhausted, the area was flooded and nature was restored, creating the present-day lake and surrounding green landscape.
The lake is part of the Oberpfälzer Seenland region and takes its name from the nearby town of Steinberg am See. Its shores serve as a gathering place where locals and visitors come to swim, walk, and spend time together by the water.
Most visitors arrive by car, with several parking areas around the lake. Those who prefer to walk or cycle will find well-marked paths along the shoreline that connect the main attractions and pass through green spaces throughout the area.
The area is home to an unusual attraction: the world's largest wooden sphere experience structure. This giant wooden structure offers visitors sweeping views of the entire lake and surrounding landscape from above.
