Kleinkastell Hillscheid, Roman archaeological site in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
Kleinkastell Hillscheid is a Roman military fort in the wooded area of Rhineland-Palatinate. The site consists of remaining foundations of an outer and inner fort with defensive ditches and marked structures, explained through informational panels.
The fort was built in the 2nd century AD as part of Rome's frontier defense along the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes. It operated for several decades to monitor trade routes before being abandoned.
The remains show how Romans protected and controlled their borders with small forts like this one. Visitors can see today how strategically this place was positioned in the landscape.
The site is located about one kilometer from modern Hillscheid village within forest and is accessible on foot. Wear sturdy shoes as the forest floor is uneven, and follow the marked foundations to understand the layout.
The fort monitored two ancient paths that crossed here and came from the Rhine direction. This made it a vital control point for goods moving between Roman and Germanic territories.
