Kreuzigungsgruppe Bad Wimpfen, Christliches Denkmal in Bad Wimpfen
The Kreuzigungsgruppe Bad Wimpfen is a stone sculpture group on the town's oldest cemetery, directly beside the church. It depicts Jesus on the cross with two other executed men, while two women mourn beside him.
The work was created between 1509 and 1519 by sculptor Hans Backoffen from Mainz. In 1551, a protective shelter was built to shield the stone sculptures from rain and snow.
The group depicts a scene that has been part of Christian tradition in Bad Wimpfen for centuries. The figures with their expressive faces and gestures invite visitors to quiet reflection on faith and suffering.
The monument stands in public space beside the church and is easy to reach. Visitors can stop by anytime to view the carving and spend a moment in quiet reflection.
A small hollow inside the cross once contained a relic, possibly a splinter of the holy cross. Two stone niches in the base were designed to hold candles while shielding them from the wind.
