Kanalkreuz Datteln

The Kanalkreuz Datteln is where two major canals cross, with the Dortmund-Ems Canal and Wesel-Datteln Canal meeting at this junction. This crossing serves as a central hub for shipping and cargo movement across the region.

Construction of this canal junction began in the 1970s and was completed in 1988. The project represented a major advancement in German inland navigation by connecting multiple transportation routes into a unified network.

The Dattelner Kanalfestival, initiated in 1969, brings together local residents and visitors to celebrate the maritime heritage through boat events and waterside activities.

The site can be viewed from public paths where you can watch boats passing through the crossing. The best viewing points are on the banks around the junction, where you can clearly see the movement of vessels.

The junction manages water levels through a series of locks spread across multiple kilometers, forming a complex system to regulate water flow. This technical solution allows vessels of different sizes to navigate at different water level elevations.
