Castra of Salisberg, Roman military fort in Hanau, Germany.
The Castra of Salisberg is an ancient Roman military fort located in Hanau. The preserved foundations and lower wall sections still display the typical layout of a garrison camp with quarters, storage areas, and administrative buildings.
The fort was built in the 2nd century and served as part of Rome's border defense against Germanic peoples. It belonged to the system of the Upper Danube Limes, which separated the Roman world from free Germanic lands.
The remains show how Roman soldiers lived and worked in this border region. You can see from the foundations today how buildings were organized for the daily life of the garrison.
The site is accessible on foot with marked pathways leading to the preserved wall sections and foundations. Wear comfortable shoes as the ground can be uneven and the remains are largely exposed to the elements.
The fort's construction methods differ from standard Roman military designs, showing how Romans adapted their building plans to local conditions. These modifications are a rare example of how Roman engineers were flexible rather than rigid in following blueprints.
