Kaufhaus Barthel, Department store in Heilbronn, Germany.
Kaufhaus Barthel was a five-story building with a distinctive rooftop terrace located at the corner of Kilian and Klara streets in Heilbronn. The structure housed retail spaces that evolved from a clothing-focused store into a comprehensive department store serving the surrounding region.
Wilhelm Barthel founded a small shop in 1949 and later built the large corner structure between 1953 and 1956. The department store shaped Heilbronn's downtown for over 60 years until its demolition in 2020.
The building housed the Postmichel restaurant, which was known for its traditional German design and served as a gathering place where locals enjoyed regional dishes.
The building occupied a prominent corner with good visibility from multiple streets. Since the structure no longer stands, the site now remains an open area in the center of town.
The building's narrow facade facing Kiliansplatz created a striking architectural division between Klara and Kilian streets, a memorable urban feature that was lost when the structure was demolished.
