Museum of City History, Municipal history museum in late Baroque residence, Freiburg-im-Breisgau, Germany.
The Museum of City History occupies a Baroque house and displays collections spanning 900 years of Freiburg's development. The rooms document the city's growth through objects, models, and artworks from different periods.
The house itself was built during the Baroque period and contains two detailed city models showing Freiburg in 1600 with medieval walls and in 1700 with fortifications. These models visualize how the city fundamentally changed its appearance over generations.
The permanent collection features objects from monasteries, universities, and craft guilds that show how daily life was organized and who held power in the medieval city. Walking through these rooms gives you a sense of how different groups shaped the town and lived alongside each other.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and closed on Mondays. It helps to allow time for exploration, as the collections are spread across multiple floors.
The building houses works by Johann Christian Wentzinger, an 18th-century artist, including sandstone sculptures titled Four Centuries. These sculptures originally came from a castle garden and display the craftsmanship of an earlier era.
