Freiburg Minster, Gothic cathedral in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.
Freiburg Minster is a Gothic Catholic church in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, with a 116 meter (381 feet) tall stone tower. The structure is built from carved stone and shapes the skyline of the old town with its openwork spire.
Construction began in 1200 under Duke Berthold V of Zähringen in Romanesque style. The shift to Gothic design occurred in 1230, giving the building its present form with the characteristic tower.
The building takes its name from the medieval term for a great church, still used in local speech today. Visitors can experience the space during services or simply walk through the nave and take in the atmosphere.
The building opens daily and visitors can explore the interior or climb the tower for a view over the city. Services take place regularly and the church remains accessible for prayer.
Lead anchors connect sections of the tower and protected the structure during the 1944 bombing raids. This technique allowed the tower to remain standing while surrounding buildings collapsed.
