Skulpturenpark Deutsche Einheit, Sculpture garden at former border crossing between Bavaria and Thuringia, Germany.
Skulpturenpark Deutsche Einheit is a sculpture garden located at the former border crossing between Bavaria and Thuringia, near Henneberg in Meiningen. The artworks, made from steel, glass, and wood, are placed outdoors across a wide open terrain that still shows traces of its former use as a boundary zone.
Until 1989, this strip of land was part of the heavily controlled border zone between East and West Germany at the Eußenhausen-Henneberg crossing. After reunification, the area was turned into a public sculpture park as a way of marking the change.
The sculptures here deal with themes of separation and reunion in ways that are visible and tangible as you walk through the site. Some works use materials like steel, glass, and wood that recall the industrial structures once found along the border.
The park sits along the former federal road B19 and can be visited without a fee. The ground is uneven in places, so sturdy footwear makes the walk more comfortable.
Four original segments of the Berlin Wall stand here as part of an installation called 'Blue Gate 1', placed outdoors on the very ground that was once a controlled border strip. These are authentic concrete sections moved here after the Wall came down in 1989.
