Schloss Oberbürg, Medieval castle in Nuremberg, Germany

Schloss Oberbürg is a medieval sandstone castle that rises above Nuremberg's historical center with fortified walls and multiple towers. The complex includes courtyards and a chapel, with structures that remain visible and accessible to visitors today.

The castle began in the 11th century as a residence for German kings and Holy Roman Emperors during their travels across the empire. It developed over centuries into one of the region's most important fortified complexes.

The double chapel in the castle shows medieval social divisions through its design, with separate prayer spaces for nobility and common people. Visitors can still observe this spatial separation in the architecture today.

Access is through Burgstrasse, where medieval gates lead to the outer courtyard and inner areas. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the castle grounds have uneven surfaces and historic cobblestones.

The Sinwell Tower from the 13th century houses a deep well that traces back to the castle's original foundation. This well was essential for water supply to residents during times of siege.
