Peterskirche

Peterskirche is a church in Romanesque style in Efringen-Kirchen and features stone walls, a tall bell tower, and architectural elements from the medieval period. The building follows Romanesque design principles with thick walls and characteristic rounded arches.

The church was founded in 1173 and demonstrates a long history of medieval building craftsmanship. Beneath its foundations, remains of a Roman villa were discovered, showing that this location was settled long before the church was built.

The church is named after the Apostle Peter and displays wall paintings from the 15th century that were uncovered during restoration work in the 1950s. These artworks offer insight into the religious imagery of that era.

A visit is possible during regular opening hours and the entrance is easily accessible. It is advisable to check current visiting times in advance, especially during the colder months.

Beneath the church floor, traces of an early cemetery from the 7th century were found, suggesting an even older religious site. These archaeological discoveries indicate that this location was used as a sacred place during the Merovingian era.
