Burg Istein, Medieval castle ruins in Efringen-Kirchen, Germany
The stone remains of Burg Istein stand on a rocky outcrop, offering views across the Rhine Valley and surrounding Baden-Württemberg countryside.
The castle, first mentioned in documents from 1233, changed ownership multiple times between the Bishops of Basel, various noble families, and the city of Basel.
The Saint Vitus Chapel, one of two original castle chapels built between 1100 and 1200, underwent restoration in the 1980s and represents medieval religious architecture.
Visitors can access the castle ruins through marked hiking paths from Efringen-Kirchen, with informational panels explaining the structure's historical significance.
Between 1900 and 1914, the medieval castle site transformed into a military fortress and later became part of the Westwall defense system until 1945.
