Isteiner Klotz, Nature reserve in Efringen-Kirchen, Germany.
Isteiner Klotz is a nature reserve featuring a limestone ridge that rises about 150 meters above the Rhine floodplain. The site covers around 26 hectares with grasslands and forested areas connected by various walking trails.
The area held military importance during World War II because of its position close to the French border. Remains from that period, including bunkers, are still visible in the landscape today.
The St. Veith Chapel sits on the ridge as a quiet reminder of a former monastery that once stood here. Today, visitors find it a contemplative spot overlooking the surrounding landscape.
The area is accessible via several marked trails that begin from parking areas at the base. Information plaques along the routes explain the geology and the variety of plants and animals found here.
The site hosts a remarkable diversity of butterflies, birds, and dragonflies that thrive on the chalky soils and varied habitats. Nature enthusiasts and bird watchers are drawn to this location for its rich biodiversity.
