Ruine Stein

Ruine Stein is a castle ruin near Planschwitz in the Vogtland that sits on a rocky outcrop above the Pirk Reservoir. The remains include a round tower and foundations that show the former layout with living quarters and a surrounding moat.

The castle was first recorded in 1327 as 'munitio lapis' under Heinrich von Machwitz and served as border defense. It lost its military role during the Thirty Years War.

The name Stein refers to the stone outcrop where it was built, shaping its entire character. You can see traces of how people actually lived here across different periods through what remains of the residential spaces.

Wear sturdy shoes because the ground is uneven and access involves climbing the rocky terrain. There is little shade, so bring sun protection if visiting on a clear day.

After losing its defensive role, the site became a residence and farming estate, continuing this use into the 18th century. This shift shows how the castle adapted to changing times rather than simply being abandoned.
