Ruine Wartstein, Castle ruin in Erbstetten, Germany.

The Wartstein ruins stand 660 meters above sea level on a rocky cliff, rising 150 meters above the Grosse Lauter valley in Baden-Württemberg.

Built around 1200, the castle changed ownership in 1392 when Heinrich von Wartstein sold it to the Dukes of Bavaria, who expanded it in 1394.

The remains include a 12-meter-high shield wall that functions as a watchtower along the main hiking trails of the Swabian Alb Association.

Visitors can reach the ruins through a 6.8-kilometer hiking path that takes approximately two hours and eighteen minutes to complete from the parking area.

The fortress features a double-gabled palace with a base area of 7.0 by 10.7 meters, protected by the shield wall structure.
