Ruine Alt-Ehrenfels

Ruine Alt-Ehrenfels is a castle fortress located on elevated ground near Hayingen, with remains that are still clearly visible today. The site commands views over the surrounding landscape, and the leftover structures show the typical layout of a medieval stronghold.

The fortress was founded in the 13th century and served as a main residence for the Lords of Ehrenfels. It was later abandoned and has remained in ruins ever since.

The ruin reflects medieval building methods that are still visible in the remaining stonework and wall patterns. These elements show how fortifications were constructed during the Middle Ages in this area.

The ruins are accessible year-round at no cost and sit on a hillside that requires some walking. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and slopes in places.

Few visitors realize the site sits at a point with particularly steep drops that greatly enhanced its defensive value in medieval times. This natural position was key to why it was built here.
