Richtfunkstelle Berlin-Frohnau, Radio transmission tower in Frohnau, Berlin, Germany.
The Richtfunkstelle Berlin-Frohnau is a telecommunications center with a 358-meter (1,175 feet) steel lattice mast and a 117-meter (384 feet) framework tower in Reinickendorf. The facility had operating rooms at 300 meters (984 feet) height and used parabolic antennas for radio transmission.
The facility was established between 1970 and 1980 as the main communication link between West Berlin and the Federal Republic. Radio relay paths crossed through East German territory as invisible bridges for thousands of daily phone conversations.
The facility symbolized West Berlin's technological independence during the division and made possible thousands of phone conversations to the west. It represented the determination to maintain connection to the Federal Republic despite the isolation.
An elevator took visitors to the operating rooms at height in about eight minutes. Access to the facility and visiting hours should be confirmed in advance, as it is a specialized technical site.
The framework tower weighed about 400 tons and carried massive parabolic antennas measuring 18 meters in diameter for beyond-horizon radio links to Gartow. These large antennas made it possible to send radio signals over greater distances and around obstacles.
