Rickelsbüller Koog, Protected area at Rodenäs, Germany.

Rickelsbüller Koog is a protected nature reserve near Rodenäs, sitting along the German-Danish border and made up of marshlands, freshwater areas, and a central lake. Footpaths connect several observation huts placed around the lake, giving visitors access to different parts of the reserve.

The reserve was set up in 1981 as part of a joint German-Danish project that formalized cooperation on nature conservation across the border. Its creation came after the area was recognized as a key stopping point for migratory birds passing through the region.

Information boards inside the reserve are written in both German and Danish, reflecting the close ties between the two neighboring countries in this border region. The place feels like a shared space where both cultures meet naturally.

The road leading into the reserve crosses the German-Danish border several times, so you move between two countries just by driving to the different viewing points. Starting at the observation hut near the entrance gives a good first look at the lake before exploring further.

The access road shifts between Germany and Denmark several times over a short distance, so visitors cross an international border repeatedly just by following the route through the reserve. This makes the drive itself a small geographic oddity worth noticing.
