Schloss Zinnitz, Neoclassical château in Calau, Germany
Schloss Zinnitz is a neoclassical castle in Calau with two stories and symmetrical facades featuring classical elements, tall windows, and a spacious entrance hall in its central section. The building displays clear geometric order and regular proportions that reflect the design principles of its era.
The castle was built in 1818 by the des Granges family and underwent substantial changes between 1864 and 1865 under Prussian finance minister von Patow. This renovation modernized the building according to 19th century preferences.
The castle stands alongside a single-nave church designed by a student of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, with a neo-Romanesque tower added in 1900. Together these structures form a harmonious architectural group within the park.
Access to the castle and park grounds is by guided tour only, which must be arranged in advance by contacting architect Robert Scholz at Schulstraße 2. It is best to plan ahead to secure a suitable time slot.
The castle served multiple roles throughout its history, functioning as a labor camp during World War II and later as a school during the East German period. This varied past left marks on the building's physical structure and how its spaces were used.
