Burg Forchtenberg

Burg Forchtenberg is a medieval castle in Forchtenberg comprising several building sections, including a thick defensive wall and underground chambers. The site has undergone comprehensive restoration and is now open for visitor exploration.

The fortress was built in the early 13th century and later came under the control of the Hohenlohe nobility. During the Thirty Years War, Swedish forces caused significant damage to the structure.

The fortress shows regional medieval defensive architecture through its rectangular tower and deep moat system that visitors can observe while walking around. The heavy stone walls and vaulted cellars demonstrate how such fortifications were constructed during the Middle Ages.

The ruins are publicly accessible and typically open for free visiting, with the restored site also hosting events. Visitors should prepare for uneven paths and stairs while wearing sturdy footwear.

A notable feature is a preserved spiral staircase tower remnant that rises above the Kochertal valley, providing views from the fortress. This structure reveals how the medieval fortress was vertically organized and used.
