Heilbronn Stadtbahn, German light railway network
The Heilbronn Stadtbahn is an urban light rail system with three lines that connect different parts of the city. The trains run on tracks through town using 750 volts direct current and switch to 15,000 volts alternating current on regional railway lines outside the city.
The system was created in the 1990s based on Karlsruhe's model and started operating in 1998. The S4 line was extended to the main station in 1999 and later expanded through the city center to Harmonie station and further to Pfühlpark.
The tram system is woven into daily life in Heilbronn, connecting different neighborhoods and bringing residents together. Trains pass through busy streets like Kaiserstrasse, where commuters, students, and visitors move through the city as part of their routine.
Trains run every 20 minutes during the day and connect the city center to outlying areas with convenient links to the main station and shopping zones. You can buy tickets at stations or online, and they work across the entire network as well as for buses and regional trains in the area.
One notable feature is that trains switch between two different electrical systems during their journey: they operate on 750 volts direct current inside the city and switch to 15,000 volts alternating current on regional routes. This dual-voltage system allows the network to serve both urban and regional destinations efficiently.
