Vogels Berg

Vogels Berg is a mountain summit in Hesse in central Germany and part of Europe's largest basalt formation. Its slopes are covered with dark volcanic stones that give the landscape a rough and natural appearance.

The mountain was created by volcanic activity about 10 to 20 million years ago, with the most intense eruptions occurring 15 to 18 million years ago. This period shaped the geological structure we see today.

The name means 'Bird Mountain' in English, referring to the many bird species that live and nest in the surrounding landscape. Visitors can observe rare species that have used the area as their home for a long time.

The ascent is possible via several hiking trails that offer different difficulty levels and present varying conditions depending on the weather. Sturdy footwear and basic hiking gear are needed to safely navigate the changing terrain.

The summit displays different types of basalt rock in primitive form, including tholeiite basalts, alkaline basalts, and basanites. These geological differences make the location interesting for nature lovers and geology enthusiasts.
