The square was created in 1890 and renamed during World War II from 1940 to 1945, later returning to its original name after the war ended. This change reflects the shifting politics that marked the city's experience during that era.
A former fortification structure from 1887 now operates as a cafe where locals and visitors gather. The public bookshelf and community events held here reflect how residents use this space to connect with one another.
The square is designed to be pedestrian-friendly and well-connected to surrounding streets via the green bridge built in 1977. Visitors will find the nearby Rhine riverbank offers opportunities for walking and taking in views along the water.
