Grüne Brücke, Pedestrian bridge in Neustadt district, Mainz, Germany.
The Grüne Brücke is a pedestrian crossing that spans the four-lane Rheinallee, connecting Feldbergstrasse with Feldbergplatz. Above the road sits a 2000-square-meter area planted with vegetation and water features that soften the passage.
Artist Dieter Magnus designed this bridge in 1981 as a response to the impact of traffic on the city. This project was an early attempt to integrate nature with urban infrastructure in Mainz.
The bridge functions as an art installation that weaves nature into the urban landscape, with water features and plantings creating a garden experience above the road. It demonstrates how green spaces can thrive in the middle of heavy traffic.
Pedestrians and cyclists can use this passage freely and access it from Feldbergstrasse or Feldbergplatz. It provides a quiet route away from the traffic noise of Rheinallee.
Since 2014, the bridge has been home to around 200,000 honeybees that forage for nectar in the wild plants. The location merges art with a living ecosystem in the heart of the city.
