Wunderbau, Architectural heritage villa in Elberfeld district, Wuppertal, Germany
The Wunderbau is a two-story villa in Elberfeld with ten window sections divided by vertical stone pilasters into three distinct parts. The structure was built entirely from natural stone, showing the solid construction methods of the 18th century.
The house was built in 1754 for merchant Peter vom Heydt and survived World War II thanks to its two-meter-thick walls. Although the roof and interior were destroyed, the massive stone structure remained intact.
The building has functioned as a Pentecostal community center since 1973, with worship services held in its vaulted cellars. This spiritual use gives the place meaning beyond its origins as a residential home.
The building sits on Am Wunderbau street and lies about two kilometers from Wuppertal's central station. It is reachable on foot, though reaching it requires a reasonable walk through the city district.
The original property featured elaborate terraced gardens carved into the rock, decorated with springs, waterfalls, and grottoes. These ornate outdoor spaces recalled ancient hanging gardens and are no longer preserved today.
