Norderelbe bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, Germany
The Norderelbe Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that crosses the Elbe in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg. It spans 411 meters and connects different parts of the city on either side of the river.
Construction was completed and opened in 1962 as an important addition to Hamburg's road network. Major reinforcement work took place in 1985 to handle growing traffic demands.
The bridge's engineering design reflects the industrial and maritime character of Hamburg's harbor area through its structural elements and architectural composition.
The structure carries the federal highway A1 and is used daily by thousands of vehicles. From a distance, its distinctive shape with two pylons is easy to spot.
The unequal span widths are handled by varying pylon heights and cable arrangements. This creates an asymmetrical design that stands apart from typical symmetrical cable-stayed bridges.
