Mausoleum of the Opel family, Industrial family mausoleum in Rüsselsheim am Main, Germany
The Opel family mausoleum is a neoclassical structure in Rüsselsheim am Main with red marble walls, golden inscriptions, and a bronze bust of company founder Adam Opel at the front. The building contains underground burial chambers with separate sections for coffins and urns.
Built in 1924 on the grounds of the Old Seilfurt Cemetery, this neoclassical structure houses the remains of approximately 30 members of the Opel family. The mausoleum was constructed during a period when the Opel works were becoming one of Germany's leading automotive companies.
The interior was designed by Frankfurt artist Otto Linnemann and features marble female sculptures and finely crafted architectural details. These elements reflect the family's appreciation for craftsmanship and their standing in German industry.
The mausoleum is normally not open to the public but can be visited through guided tours organized by the City and Industrial Museum. Visitors should arrange a tour in advance to ensure access.
The underground burial chamber was designed with a limited number of coffin spaces, and the last available spot was filled in 2001. This means the mausoleum cannot be expanded further and now functions as a closed family tomb.
