Rüsselsheim am Main, Industrial city in Frankfurt Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region, Germany
Rüsselsheim am Main sits on the northern bank of the Main River between Frankfurt and Mainz, incorporating the neighborhoods of Bauschheim, Hassloch and Königstädten. The built-up area extends from the riverside up to gently rising fields at about 88 meters (290 feet) above sea level.
The settlement began in the 5th century as a Frankish farmstead and was first recorded in writing in 840 as Rucilesheim. From 1899 onward, the construction of the Opel factory transformed the agricultural community into an industrial hub of the Rhine-Main area.
The name comes from a Frankish settler called Rucila, whose farmstead once stood here. Today you can see remnants of old factory buildings alongside modern residential blocks, showing how the settlement grew from a village into a workers' town.
Regional trains connect the station directly with Frankfurt and Mainz, making day trips from either direction easy. The neighborhoods of Bauschheim and Königstädten can be reached by local bus or on foot along riverside paths.
The local theater regularly stages plays about the history of automobile production and its impact on residents' daily life. The museum displays original tools and machines from the early decades of vehicle manufacturing, offering visitors insights into technical evolution.
