Elztalmuseum, Local history museum in Waldkirch, Germany.
The Elztalmuseum occupies a baroque building with four floors and roughly 1700 square meters of display space in Waldkirch. Twelve exhibition rooms and five themed islands present regional objects and mechanical musical instruments from the Black Forest region.
The building began as an 18th-century residence for the provost of Saint Margarethen monastery. It later served as a military hospital and school before its conversion into a museum.
The collection documents the organ-building craft for which this region has been known for around 200 years. Visitors see mechanical musical instruments, fairground organs, and orchestrions that were all made locally.
The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 1 to 5 PM and Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM. Admission is affordable and the building is easy to reach by car or public transportation.
The museum displays the Altobella Furiosa, a contemporary organ by pop art artist Otmar Alt. This instrument produces sounds equivalent to a nine-member musical ensemble.
