Aquarium Wilhelmshaven, Public aquarium on South Beach Promenade, Wilhelmshaven, Germany
Aquarium Wilhelmshaven is a public marine facility on the South Beach Promenade housing both saltwater and freshwater tanks of varying sizes. More than 300 aquatic species from oceans worldwide inhabit these displays, ranging from small fish to large predators.
The facility was originally established to introduce visitors to marine biology and grew into a larger complex over time. In 2015, it expanded by adding the Prehistoric Sea Museum section, which displays roughly 500 aquatic fossils from ancient seas.
The facility takes its name from its location on the South Beach Promenade and focuses entirely on ocean life and marine ecosystems. Daily feeding sessions with staff commentary help visitors connect with seals, penguins, and sharks in ways that go beyond simple observation.
The facility is easily accessible and sits directly on the beach promenade, where you can also spend time in the open air. Plan to spend at least an hour and a half to explore all the tanks and exhibitions without rushing.
A permanent exhibition showcases fossils of marine reptiles that roamed the oceans millions of years ago, often massive predators of ancient seas. These displays create a striking contrast between living species seen elsewhere in the facility and long-extinct ocean giants.
