Alter Schwede, Glacial erratic in Altona, Germany
Alter Schwede is a granite boulder located on the banks of the Elbe River in Altona, standing approximately 4.5 meters tall. With a circumference of around 20 meters, this stone is a notable landmark that shapes the character of this stretch of riverbank.
This boulder originates from Småland and was transported by ice during the Elster Ice Age approximately 400,000 years ago. After spending millennia beneath the river, it was discovered in 1999 and subsequently relocated to its current riverside position.
The name refers to folk traditions connected to Swedish history and heritage. Locals and visitors now see it as part of the Elbe riverbank's character and use the area for walks and gatherings.
The site is easily accessible and located in a public area with open access to the riverside promenade. Nearby restaurants and beach bars make it a pleasant destination for a riverside walk.
Recovering this boulder from the riverbed proved technically challenging and required multiple attempts before success. This difficult rescue operation drew international attention and demonstrates how much the city valued bringing this geological treasure to light.
