Villa de Freitas, Cultural heritage monument in Othmarschen, Germany
Villa de Freitas is a listed residential building at Elbchaussee 239 in Othmarschen, Hamburg, designed by the architects Lundt and Kallmorgen. The grounds also contain two greenhouses and service buildings, which sit on the western side of the property.
Merchant Carlos Pedro de Freitas bought the plot in 1903 from the heirs of Baron Johannes Eduard von Mutzenbecher and had the current building constructed shortly after. At that time, the stretch along the Elbe had become the favored place for successful traders to build their homes.
The Elbchaussee was the favored address of wealthy Hamburg merchants in the early 20th century, and this property was among the grand residences that lined the road. Passing by today, it still shows how trade success was expressed through architecture and garden layout.
The building sits along the Elbchaussee and is easy to see from the road as you pass through the residential area. Since it is a private home, access to the grounds is not possible, but the facade and garden are visible from the street.
The house stood empty for years before it was bought in 2011 and carefully renovated to serve again as a home. The name of the villa has been kept ever since, keeping the memory of the original merchant family alive.
