Jenisch House, Neoclassical country house in Othmarschen, Germany
Jenisch House is a neoclassical country residence in Hamburg-Altona with four floors, oversized windows, and a columned facade. The building rises above Jenisch Park with refined proportions and now functions as an art museum.
Hamburg Senator Martin Johann Jenisch commissioned architect Franz Gustav Forsmann to build this country villa in 1831 as a private retreat. The house reflected the wealth and taste of Hamburg's merchant class during the early 19th century.
The house presents rotating exhibitions about 19th-century art and everyday life in spacious gallery rooms. Visitors can see how wealthy Hamburg residents once lived and what artworks they collected.
The museum sits in a quiet park setting and is easily accessible by public transport. Visiting is flexible with timing, and there is a café on-site with views of the green surroundings.
Architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel contributed renowned design concepts that gave the building special elegance. The window arrangement creates surprising light effects that transform the interior throughout the day.
