Elbschloss-Brauerei, Historical brewery in Altona, Germany
Elbschloss-Brauerei is a former factory with several red brick buildings on the Elbe River in Hamburg's western edge. Today the main building houses residential apartments, while the remaining structures preserve the original industrial layout.
The brewery was founded in 1881 on the grounds of an 18th-century neoclassical country house. The industrial works shaped Altona's economic life for over a century until production ceased in 1997.
The site takes its name from the former country house that once occupied this location, and the brick buildings still shape Altona's streetscape today. The architecture reminds visitors of this area's industrial heritage along the river.
The complex sits close to the Elbe River and is visible from the street, though some areas are private. Visitors can explore the facade and site layout from outside, but should note that residential buildings cannot be entered.
One of the facility's main brands was Ratsherrn Pils, which reached production volumes of around 150,000 hectoliters in peak years. A special dark beer called Dübelsbrücker Dunkel was introduced in 1988 and named after the nearby Teufelsbrück area.
