Bei der Silberpappel

Bei der Silberpappel is a protected nature reserve along the right bank of the Rhine River in Mannheim, spanning around 8.6 hectares of floodplain forest with silver poplars and black poplars. The area consists of moist woodland stands that form typical river ecosystems with dense vegetation along the waterfront.

The protected area takes its name from a silver poplar tree around 250 years old that was struck by lightning and had to be felled in 1936. The renaming of the site after this distinctive tree reflects the historical importance of this natural landmark to local identity.

The area forms part of the Waldpark complex and contributes to nature education programs and the preservation of natural habitats in the Mannheim region.

The reserve itself is not open to public access, but visitors can observe the protected ecosystem from designated paths in the adjacent Waldpark. The best way to spot wildlife is to walk quietly along these paths during early morning or dusk hours.

Within the area sits a restored ancient Rhine channel called Hagbau that runs parallel to the main river and provides habitat for kingfishers and water bats. These restored old waterways are particularly interesting for visitors because they support rare species rarely seen in other river sections.
