Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Ludwigshafen
Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium Ludwigshafen, Cultural heritage gymnasium in Ludwigshafen, Germany
Description
The Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium is a school in Ludwigshafen with architecture from the late 19th century that is still standing today. Within these historical buildings, students now use modern digital boards in their classrooms.
History
The school was founded in 1875 by citizens to provide higher education for girls, starting with about 60 students. The Scholl siblings, who died in resistance against the Nazi regime, gave their name to the institution later to keep that memory alive.
Culture
The school is named after the Scholl siblings, those resistance fighters of the White Rose, whose legacy is present through a monument built on the grounds in 1991. The square in front was renamed in 2021 to honor them, creating a space where students engage with their story.
Practical
Visitors can explore the school through its public presence and monuments on the grounds, especially the memorial stone built in 1991. A walk around the school grounds shows how historical buildings blend with modern facilities.
Did you know?
Every February the school holds a special day when students dive into the history and ideals of Hans and Sophie Scholl. This memorial day connects the school building with the personal stories of those who stood up against injustice.
