Tempelhofer Ufer 23–24, Heritage office building in Kreuzberg, Germany
Tempelhofer Ufer 23-24 is a protected office and commercial building in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin, situated along the Landwehr Canal. The sandstone facade is structured with heavy columns and relief carvings, and the interior features a central staircase along with large formal rooms.
The building was designed in 1913 by Berlin architects Cremer and Wolffenstein for Orenstein & Koppel, a machinery company with operations across several continents at the time. After the company left, the building passed through different occupants while its original structure remained largely unchanged.
The sandstone facade follows a style common in early 1900s Berlin, where commercial buildings were designed to look as grand as public institutions. The heavy columns and carved details at street level are clearly visible to anyone walking past.
The facade can be seen from the street without entering the building, so a short stop on the pavement is enough to take in the stonework. Natural light during the day makes the carved details easier to spot.
A relief carving of a globe is worked into the facade, placed there to signal the worldwide reach of Orenstein & Koppel when the building was new. The company was involved in large infrastructure projects on several continents at the time, from mining railways to port equipment.
