Kühlhaus am Gleisdreieck, Industrial heritage monument in Kreuzberg, Germany
Kühlhaus am Gleisdreieck is an eight-story industrial brick building near Gleisdreieck station with a total area of about 6000 square meters. Its structure combines Gothic elements with steel frames and concrete floors designed to support heavy storage loads.
The building was erected in 1901 as Europe's largest refrigerated storage facility and used its railway connection to supply Berlin with fresh food. Over the 20th century it lost this function and was later repurposed as a cultural venue.
Today it functions as a venue for fashion shows, concerts, theater, and art exhibitions that draw visitors throughout the year. This mix of events has made it an active place in the contemporary arts scene.
The building sits conveniently near public transportation making it easy to reach. It preserves its industrial character while hosting diverse events and artistic presentations in its spacious interior.
The building pioneered large-scale reinforced concrete construction in Berlin at the start of the 20th century. This structural innovation allowed heavy loads to be supported without interior columns, influencing the future of modern construction in the city.
