St. Antonius, Gothic Revival parish church in Papenburg, Germany.
St. Antonius is a Gothic Revival parish church built from brick in Papenburg featuring an 88-meter tower. Its interior showcases a French sandstone altar and stained glass windows depicting people on their faith journey, along with a 2019 Walcker organ, which is the largest church instrument in the Diocese of Osnabrück.
Construction started in 1875 under architect Alexander Behnes and required over one million bricks for the foundation. The church was consecrated in 1877 and has since become a landmark of the town.
The church displays maritime connections in its artworks, including apostles depicted in a boat, which reflects Papenburg's shipbuilding tradition. These representations link the community's faith with the identity of their town.
Visitors should know that the church is particularly striking from outside due to its height and architecture, especially when viewed from the street. The best time to visit is during daytime when natural light makes the stained glass windows come alive.
The Fish Net installation consists of individually designed fish created by parents to commemorate their baptized children. This personal artwork transforms the building into a space where family and faith come together.
