Cobblestone mosaics, Decorative stone mosaics in Old Town, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.
The mosaics are geometric and symbolic patterns made from colored stones set directly into the street pavement. They combine red porphyry blocks with white marble and Rhine pebbles into intricate designs that spread across the sidewalks of the Old Town.
The tradition began in 1858 with paver Alois Krems, who brought techniques from southern France to Freiburg. This original idea has been continued and developed across many streets in the district ever since.
The mosaics display guild symbols and craft marks connected to the trades that once operated in nearby buildings, telling the story of the district's working past. Looking closely at the patterns reveals clues about the former activities that shaped these streets.
The mosaics are best seen on Augustinergasse and Kaiser-Joseph-Straße, where they stand out on the ground. Since the stones can be slippery when wet, it helps to walk slowly in rainy weather and wear comfortable shoes.
Craftspeople repair the mosaics using portable wooden stencils and steel mortar ladles, avoiding the need for large-scale road work. This practical approach makes it possible to maintain the artistic patterns across generations.
