Borken, Administrative district in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Borken is a district in northwestern North Rhine-Westphalia featuring open, flat countryside with numerous rural communities. The area spans wide agricultural and pastoral spaces between major rivers and shares borders with both the Netherlands and Lower Saxony.
The district was created in 1975 through the merger of the former Borken district, Ahaus district, and the city of Bocholt. This consolidation formed the administrative unit that has defined the region ever since.
The district coat of arms displays three white anchors representing the merger of old Borken district, Ahaus district, and Bocholt city.
The two main cities of Bocholt and Gronau serve as key reference points within the district. Visitors will find shops, services, and connections to smaller settlements in these hubs.
The district shares borders with seven different administrative regions, including two Dutch provinces: Gelderland and Overijssel.
