Ausbesserungswerk Darmstadt is a large former factory complex in Darmstadt, Germany, built to repair and maintain trains. The site features sturdy factory buildings with high ceilings and large doors, old rail tracks, a water tower built in the 19th century, and two underground bunkers from World War II positioned in the northwestern section.
The railway repair workshop began operating in 1873 as the main maintenance facility for regional trains, repairing locomotives and wagons until closure in 2000. After the city of Darmstadt acquired the site in the early 2000s, redevelopment plans were implemented, with portions converted to new businesses, municipal services, and later an apprenticeship center.
The site was known locally as 'Knell' because of the loud sounds from repair work that could be heard in nearby neighborhoods. For residents, this name became synonymous with the daily rhythm of train maintenance activity that shaped local life for generations.
