Altstädtisches Rathaus
Altstädtisches Rathaus, Gothic town hall in Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany
The Altstädtisches Rathaus stands on the market square with a red brick facade, ornate gables, and a tall tower designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
Built in 1468 to replace a wooden structure from 1290, the building served as the administrative center of Brandenburg's Old Town until 1715.
The Roland statue from 1474, positioned in front of the town hall, represents municipal independence with its 5.33-meter sandstone figure holding a sword.
The building underwent extensive renovation between 1911 and 1912, preventing its demolition after years of military use and structural deterioration.
The basement of the tower contains a prison cell, while the ground floor previously housed a medieval court chamber for local proceedings.
