Friedenswarte Brandenburg, Observation tower in Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany
The Friedenswarte is an observation tower in Brandenburg an der Havel with two separate staircases serving ten viewing platforms arranged at different heights. The structure provides both enclosed and open-air platforms for panoramic views across the city and surrounding areas.
The tower was originally built in 1908 as Bismarckwarte, named after political ideals of that era. It was renamed to Friedenswarte in 1958 after World War II, and completely reconstructed in 1974 by architect Günter Franke.
The name reflects a deliberate shift in values: the structure now symbolizes peace rather than political power. Visitors encounter a place designed for contemplation and connection with the surrounding landscape.
The climb involves about 360 steps distributed across two separate staircases, with distinct routes for going up and coming down. Visitors can pause at various platforms along the way and are not required to reach the highest point if they prefer shorter views.
The structure incorporates modern materials such as chrome-nickel steel and glass in its design, setting it apart from traditional observation towers. These contemporary elements define its appearance and reflect the deliberate choice to build anew rather than simply restore the original.
