Blinder See Kanzach

Blinder See Kanzach is a nature reserve covering roughly 10 hectares with a lake surrounded by intermediate moor and floating vegetation mats in the Dürmentinger forest. The site sits at approximately 582 meters elevation.

The lake formed during the 1920s from peat extraction after groundwater levels were artificially lowered in 1919. The area was later protected to preserve the resulting landscape.

The reserve demonstrates how human activities can transform a landscape and how nature can recover when properly protected. Visitors experience a working example of conservation in action.

The reserve is accessible from a parking area along the L282 road between Kanzach and Marbach, with only a short walk from there. The paths are well-marked and lead through the moor to viewing points.

The Schwingrasen are floating grass mats that partially cover the former peat lake and bounce gently with each step on them. These floating vegetation islands are rare to see in Central Europe and shift constantly.
