Sankt Alto und Birgitta, Baroque parish church in Altomünster, Germany.
Sankt Alto und Birgitta is a baroque parish church in Altomünster with a distinctive octagonal floor plan and a suspended dome as its main roof element. The interior features fine stucco work, columns, and ornamental details, while angel-shaped figures serve as structural supports.
The building was constructed between 1763 and 1773 by architect Johann Michael Fischer and replaced an older Romanesque structure from the 13th century. The redesign followed baroque style principles and fundamentally changed the church's appearance.
The ceiling paintings show religious scenes and the history of the nearby monastery, which shaped the community for centuries. These works illustrate the connection between the church and monastic life, which long served as the spiritual and cultural center of the region.
The church is usually open during visiting hours and offers free access to the interior with space to walk around and view the details. It is advisable to be quiet and respect other visitors and prayer times.
An automated carillon with 24 bells in the church tower has been playing melodies regularly since 2005. This installation often surprises visitors and contributes to the acoustic character of the place.
