Altomünster, Market municipality in Dachau district, Bavaria, Germany
Altomünster is a market municipality in Dachau district, Bavaria, situated across gently rolling countryside. The municipality comprises several villages and hamlets connected by meadows and small woodlands.
Settlement began around 750 when monk Alto founded a Benedictine monastery that later grew in importance. Through the medieval period, the monastery shaped the area's development before shifting to secular leadership in modern times.
The marketplace, established by Ingolstadt dukes in 1420, still anchors the center of the municipality and remains where locals gather. Shops and community facilities continue to line this central space, shaping daily life in the municipality.
The municipality is easily accessible by tram and bus, with connections to Munich taking about 30 minutes. Those interested in walking or cycling will find plenty of paths and routes through the surrounding countryside.
The monastery of Saint Bridget, founded in 1496, remains the only active convent of this order in Germany. Visitors can witness a living religious tradition here that exists nowhere else in the country.
