Betriebshof Lichtenberg, Tram depot in Lichtenberg, Germany.
The Betriebshof Lichtenberg is a large maintenance facility for trams and buses located in eastern Berlin with extensive sheds and workshop areas. Vehicles are serviced, repaired, and stored here, visible through the tracks and vehicle halls spread across the grounds.
This depot opened in 1913 as the world's largest tram facility with state-of-the-art workshops of its time. After World War Two, operations resumed and expanded to include buses starting in 1972.
This facility shaped how Berliners moved through their city for over a century and remains central to daily transportation routines. The depot reflects the choices and needs of urban life in a growing metropolis.
The grounds are large and spread out, so allow time for exploration and wear comfortable walking shoes. The best time to visit is during working hours when you can observe vehicle activity and daily operations.
In 2016, this facility hosted the European Tram Championship where operators from different countries demonstrated their driving skills. This event highlighted the depot's continued importance as a center for European transport professionals.
