Landschaftspark Herzberge

Landschaftspark Herzberge is a large park in eastern Berlin spanning 100 hectares with forested areas, meadows, orchards, ponds, and natural habitats. The grounds feature distinct zones for recreation, farming, and conservation that flow together across the landscape.

The site was formerly a freight train shunting yard and an East German youth camp before becoming a conservation and farming project starting in 2004. This transformation demonstrates how an industrial area was repurposed into a space for nature and public use.

The park brings together farming and public recreation through the grazing of Pomeranian sheep that maintain the landscape. Visitors can observe how traditional grazing practices are woven into the daily life of the grounds.

The park is easily accessible with dedicated walking and cycling paths that run throughout the grounds. Wear appropriate footwear as the terrain varies depending on the season and recent weather.

Within the park's farming area sits an innovative aquaponics system that produces fish and vegetables in a closed-loop environment. This setup shows how modern technology and rural methods work together to grow food within the city.
